This summer's dry weather has offered a useful reminder of how quickly land can respond to heat and a lack of rain. Looking back at the season, we explore what changed and the practical lessons that can help us prepare our gardens and homesteads for future summers.

This summer has given many growers a particularly clear view of what happens when warmth arrives and the rain does not. Across gardens, allotments and larger plots, the effects have been easy to recognise: lawns turning brown, vegetable beds drying more quickly, fruit trees showing signs of stress and once-soft ground becoming increasingly hard beneath the feet. Some plants coped remarkably well, while others began to struggle as the dry spell settled in. Looking back now, those differences offer useful clues about how we can make our land more resilient.

One of the most noticeable changes was in the soil. Areas left exposed lost moisture quickly, particularly where they received direct sunlight for much of the day. Mulched beds behaved differently, with organic material helping to shade the surface and slow evaporation. Where compost, leaf mould or other organic matter had been incorporated over previous seasons, the soil also tended to remain more workable beneath the surface. It was a useful reminder that building healthy soil is a form of drought preparation in itself, rather than something that can easily be added once a heatwave has arrived. We saw this first-hand with our small urban homestead experiencing a drastic difference in crop behaviour in beds that hadn't been as well mulched.

Water became another important consideration. During wetter periods, it is easy to assume there will always be enough available, but several weeks without meaningful rainfall can change that quickly. Rainwater collected from roofs and sheds proved particularly valuable where storage was available, while carefully directed watering helped established plants make better use of what was available. The experience also highlighted the potential value of greywater for suitable non-edible areas, provided it is collected and used safely and responsibly.

Heat created another layer of pressure. Plants growing in full sun often showed stress sooner than those with some afternoon shade, while containers could become surprisingly hot and dry. Moving potted plants, young trees and other vulnerable plants into temporary shade became a simple but effective way of reducing the pressure. Shade cloth, netting and other temporary structures also created cooler pockets without requiring permanent changes to the garden. In many cases, the lesson was simply that a small change in position could make a considerable difference.

The dry conditions also revealed which plants were naturally better suited to the site. Some vegetables continued growing with relatively little intervention, while others stopped producing or required considerably more water. Perennial plants and established fruit trees generally had deeper root systems to draw upon, although even mature trees can suffer when drought becomes prolonged. These observations are useful because they allow future planting decisions to be based on what actually performs well rather than simply what looks appealing in a seed catalogue.


Dry weather has a way of revealing the strengths and weaknesses that are already present in a piece of land. Areas with good soil structure, ground cover, established roots and access to stored water were generally better able to cope. Places with bare soil, shallow-rooted plants or poor water retention required much more attention. None of this means a garden needs to be redesigned after one difficult summer, but the season has provided an opportunity to see where relatively small improvements could make a difference.

The effects extended beyond vegetable gardens too. Grass became an obvious indicator of how quickly the landscape can change when rainfall falls behind evaporation. Established lawns can naturally enter a dormant state during drought and recover when wetter conditions return, meaning that allowing some areas to brown rather than constantly watering them can be the more sensible approach. Longer grass and uncut areas can also provide shade at ground level, helping protect soil and supporting insects during periods when the landscape is under pressure.

Fruit trees provided another interesting lesson. Trees with good ground cover beneath them generally appeared better protected from rapid moisture loss than those growing in bare soil. A generous mulch around the root zone, kept away from the trunk itself, can help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. The summer has reinforced the value of thinking about trees as part of a wider system rather than simply watering them when they begin to wilt.

Perhaps the most useful lesson has been the importance of creating shade before it is urgently needed. Permanent trees and hedges are the long-term solution, but temporary measures can bridge the gap while a garden develops. A movable shade structure, a piece of shade cloth or even the careful positioning of taller plants can create valuable protection during the hottest hours. This becomes particularly useful on smaller plots where there may be few mature trees.

The same principle applies to livestock. Animals need access to shade and reliable water during periods of extreme heat, and moving shelters, fencing or grazing areas can sometimes provide a practical solution where permanent structures are not yet available. Rotational grazing can also help prevent already-stressed vegetation from being repeatedly grazed down, giving areas of pasture time to recover when rainfall eventually returns.

Looking back at the season also makes the value of diversity clearer. A homestead containing only a small number of crops can be particularly vulnerable when one or two struggle with the weather. A wider mixture of vegetables, perennial plants, fruit, herbs and other useful species spreads that risk. Some may fail, while others continue producing, leaving the household with something to harvest even during a difficult season.

This does not mean every plant needs to be drought tolerant. There is still a place for crops that require more consistent moisture, particularly when they are grown in beds where water can be managed efficiently. The important point is to understand where those crops belong. The wettest or most easily watered parts of a plot can support thirstier plants, while drier margins can be given to species that naturally cope better with limited moisture.

The summer has also highlighted something that is easy to overlook: water management begins when it rains. Capturing rainfall from roofs, directing runoff towards planting areas, improving soil structure and creating places where water can slowly infiltrate all make more sense than waiting until the ground is already dry. Even a small water butt can provide a useful reserve, while larger properties may have opportunities for ponds, swales or other landscape features that slow the movement of water across the land. As the weather begins to change, there is value in walking the plot and making a few notes. Which areas dried first? Which crops continued growing? These observations are simple, but they create a record that can guide decisions next spring.

The most useful thing a dry summer can leave behind is not damage, but information. It shows us where the land is vulnerable and where it already has resilience. From improving soil with organic matter and increasing ground cover to collecting more rainwater, creating temporary shade and choosing plants suited to local conditions, many of the improvements are relatively straightforward.

Looking back, the aim is not to declare the summer a success or failure. Difficult weather is part of working with land, and no homestead can completely control it. What we can do is learn from how the ground, plants and animals responded and use those observations to make the next season a little easier. The land has shown us what it needed this year. The opportunity now is to listen and prepare before the next period of heat arrives.
